In the Community

First Baptist believes that we are called by God to be a light in our community.

We love our city and we are grateful to join hands with other ministries to share the love of Jesus. Some of the local ministries we support include:

BACKPACKS OF HOPE

Food bags are provided once a week for low income elementary students to ensure they have food over the weekends during the school year. 70 bags are packed each week and delivered to the local schools who then distribute them to the kids.

EAST ACRES EVANGELISM

We provide regular support for families living in the low income neighborhood.  Support is given in the form of school supplies, food, block parties, Bible studies and other means of encouragement and investment.

COMMUNITY FALL FESTIVAL

A free outdoor festival event for Austinville Elementary school students, families, and neighbors. Activities include carnival games, inflatables, trunk or treat, and food.

COMMUNITY EGG HUNT

A free community event at Rhodes Ferry Park that incorporates inflatables, games, and creative guest speakers.  School assemblies are also provided to Somerville Road Elementary and Austinville Elementary the day of the egg hunt.

SHINING STARS (SPECIAL NEEDS MINISTRY)

This vital community-focused outreach program provides much needed relief for the parents of “special needs” children in the form of a night out each quarter.  In addition, the “Shining Stars” children of special needs are provided a supervised program that includes evangelistic-based entertainment, supervised recreational activities and a nutritional meal.

CARPENTERS FOR CHRIST

This ministry is active in our community meeting the needs of the elderly and those needing a helping hand.  Building wheelchair ramps for those in our community has become one of the more popular projects.

COMMITTEE ON CHURCH COOPERATION (CCC)

This ministry in downtown Decatur provides warm meals, clothes and assistance to the poor and homeless in our area.  We support this ministry though our budget and manpower.  Our JOY ministry (Senior adults) serves with them regularly.

FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES (FCA)

This Christ-centered ministry is active in our local middle and high schools here in Decatur and surrounding areas.  They are reaching people for Christ each week.  One of the highlights of our year, is hosting the annual FCA prayer breakfast where over 400 students come to be challenged in their walk with Christ.

GO BUS MINISTRY

Each Sunday our church bus picks up families who want to attend FBC but are unable to provide their own transportation.  We also provide food and mentoring for these families.

MEALS ON WHEELS

Several of our members use their time to deliver meals to those who are unable to leave their homes.  This ministry delivers hundreds of meals to homebound residents living in Morgan County.

NEIGHBORHOOD CHRISTIAN CENTER (NCC)

It is difficult to keep track of the numerous ways this ministry is meeting the needs of those in our community.  From mentoring, to job skill training, to prison ministry outreach, to involvement with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Decatur, they making a true impact in our community.  We are thrilled to partner with them to serve those in our community.  Our student ministry, in particular, serves with this ministry on an ongoing basis.

SAV-A-LIFE PREGNANCY RESOURCE CENTER

This life-saving ministry provides counseling and resources to hundreds of women in our area.  They are truly doing the Lord’s work and we are thankful to join them in their work to protect life.
