An interview with
What is your most vivid memory as a child? Positive memories – Swimming, Water Skiing, and Tubing at the lake. Playing baseball. Special meals at my Mama Jordie’s (grandmother) house. Negative memories – My Dad was successful in business, but had a drinking problem that was harmful to the family. What is your favorite memory regarding your spouse or children? Thousands of them! Kay has enriched my life in so many ways, but becoming parents was awesome. I loved being Daddy to Micah and Carmen, but am enjoying being Dad to them as grown adults. Wow, did the years fly. What is your favorite tradition at Christmas? Christmas Eve celebration - our family enjoys a meal of shrimp, baked potato, and salad, with Christmas music playing. Then share the lighting of the Advent Candle and reading the Christmas story around our table. All seemed to be a peace with our world. How did you propose to Kay? I met her at the altar of her home Church when we were college, looked into her beautiful green eyes, heard her talk about the Lord, and knew there was something special. Months later I had talked with her parents and asked for their blessings. I had planned a romantic time of getting on my knees and purposing. However, I was so excited that I pulled the car into a parking lot and asked her to married me. She said “Yes”. Later that evening at my grandmother’s house I did get on my knees, looked again into her eyes and asked her to share life with me and become my wife. She said “Yes” again. Twice she accepted my proposal and we have been richly blessed together. Kay is a marvelous lady. What do you love most about Kay? Kay’s love for Christ and caring for people inspires me. She has believed in me and been willing to follow me in ministry opportunities. She has sometimes been the velvet cloth that polishes me to shine and sometimes she has been the sandpaper to smooth of rough edges in my life – always she has loved me. I think of her often each day and thank God for Kay being my partner in life. Together we experienced all the joys and challenges of parenting. I love Kay for being Kay. What is something that would surprise us about you? One summer I took care of an elephant – feeding, cleaning, and playing. This was a big, often messy, sometimes smelly, and lots of fun experience. How did you come to know Christ? A cute girl invited me to Church and I went. There three caring men who invested time in teenagers taught me, loved me, and invested in me. They challenged me to know Jesus Christ as my Savior. What were your best and worst subjects in school? Enjoyed subjects that involved knowing about people - history, current events, psychology, and political science were fun. Math was unpleasant, but I believe a good teacher can make all subjects interesting. How did you enter the ministry? God Called and I responded. As a teenager I began to feel God was calling me to do something with my life and a wise pastor guided me in understanding a Call to a vocational ministry. What is your favorite Food – I enjoy almost everything. Top desires: Country cooking, Asian, Good hamburgers, and years as a Youth Pastor left with a strong addiction to pizza along with diet coke. Color - Blue Season Fall, no Spring, no Fall, no Spring. It is a toss up between Fall and Spring. Sport – Snow skiing and Base Ball Music – Good Jazz Musical group – Depends on the mood of the day Book – I have hundreds and treasure nuggets of wisdom from all of them. “Tender Warrior” by Steu Weber, “40 Days of Purpose” by Rick Warren, “Experiencing God” by Henry Blackaby, “Thirty Days to Confident Leadership” by Bob Biehl, I had better stop before I starting listing my library. Song – Fun – “The Gambler” by Kenny Rogers, Favorite hymn – “Amazing Grace”. Bible verse – John 15:11 “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” Movie – Heart tugging -“The Blind Side”. Adventure would be all of the “Star Wars” movies. |
