Trusting God to Take Care of Our Needs

The sermon that Sunday morning was on materialism, possessions and giving. Prior to the start of our lesson, a member of our Sunday school class began to talk about the sermon.  The member and his wife are fairly new and we did not know much about their personal history. He shared that he accepted Christ as his Savior at a young age, but lived a life that was not always pleasing to God as a young adult.  After 14 years of marriage his previous wife filed for divorce and he became an every other weekend Dad. Not being with his children on a daily basis was extremely painful for him. While telling his story I noticed how lovingly he looked at his wife. They married following his divorce and they began attending and serving in a local church. He did not believe in tithing and was not a good money manager. His wife had an accounting degree and she began managing their finances.  His only charge to his wife was no tithing.  He said, “God doesn’t use a calculator.” He said he was accustom to handling life much like his previous marriage and wasn’t always nice or loving to his new wife.  Even though he could see the hurt in her eyes, she was not one to argue.  She knew to pray for her husband. He said that paying child support made their financial circumstances grim.  Finances and life remained strained for over a year and finally their financial situation began to turn around; as did their lives.  One Sunday morning, one of his children was handed the offering by his wife to place in the offering plate. His child opened the check and her eyes widened. He saw her expression and realized that it was not his normal offering. His wife had been tithing for them.  At that moment he realized how much God had been at work through his wife’s prayers, obedience and faith.  From that point forward he became obedient with his tithes.  Not only had he been blessed financially but he that God had something bigger in store for his family. Within weeks of that day circumstances changed with his children’s home life and they were able to gain custody. God relieved him from paying child support.  He wanted everyone in our class to know that he wasn’t sharing a “prosperity giving” message, he was sharing the importance of obedience, having faith and trusting God to take care of our needs.  He expressed how grateful he was that God allowed him to hug his children every night before bed and to wake up with them his house each morning.  He said “We can never out give God.”

Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all of your increase;
So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

Proverbs 3:9-10

If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.
